It’s very common for people to use the terms “earphones” and “earbuds” interchangeably, but there’s actually a difference between the two and today I want to show you all about it. Let’s get started!
The main difference between earphones and earbuds is their appearance. Earphones come with cushions so they can fit more comfortably in your ear. These cushions can be made of memory foam, silicone or rubber and they’re designed to fit inside the ear canal perfectly.
Earbuds, on the other hand, don’t have any cushions because they fit outside the ear canal as opposed to earphones. The problem is that earbuds easily slip off because they only come in one size.
As you know, earphones and earbuds can also be wireless and people prefer them simply because there are no cables in the way.
The second big difference is the price! Earphones usually cost more than earbuds because they offer better bass control, better sound quality, and better exterior design to fit comfortably inside the ear.
Earbuds are a bit cheaper, which makes them easier to replace. They usually come free of charge as an accessory for mobile phones and media players, but the only extra function that some of them have is volume control.
Earbuds, because they fit outside the ear canal, are not completely isolating and you will experience more sound leakage. If you don’t want to be completely cut off from the outside world, they’re the choice for you.
If you do want privacy when you’re listening to music, then you should choose earphones because the cushion design and higher sound quality allow for complete isolation.
To summarize, the major difference between earphones and earbuds is design. Earphones are in-ear devices, they come in different sizes and they feature different cushion design to fit more comfortably. Some earphones are shaped to lock into the concha and others have a protrusion to fit further into the ear canal.
Earbuds, on the other hand, don’t have cushions and they’re designed to be held in place on your outer ear. They come only in one size, which doesn’t guarantee comfort, they don’t isolate external noise entirely, and they are not as powerful when it comes to bass.
At the end of the day, earphones and earbuds both have their own set of advantages and disadvantages, so the one you choose will depend entirely on the use you give them.
If you want something so you can listen to music while you walk around the city and still be able to hear outside noise, or if you want an inexpensive option to workout or to gift a child, earbuds are the way to go. If you want a bit more comfort, durability, isolation, and better sound quality to do your work in peace, earphones are the right choice.
